20 States That Might Take Your Gun: Is Yours Listed?

Owning a gun is a big deal in many places around the world. But, the United States stands out because it’s one of the few places where people have the right to own guns written into the constitution. Even so, not everyone in the U.S. can just have a gun whenever they want. There are rules from the federal government that say who can’t have guns. Also, different states have their own rules about when they can take guns away from people, especially if someone is seen as a very high risk or if they’re involved in family violence.

If you’re really into being ready for anything, it’s super important to know about these gun laws. It’s not just about making sure you can protect yourself. It’s also about making sure you’re following the law and keeping your rights safe. Let’s dive into which states have specific rules about taking guns away.

New Jersey

In New Jersey, the law can take your gun away for a bit if you’re thought to be a very high risk. This can start with just 10 days but might go on for longer. If you’ve been convicted of family violence, you have to give up your guns. But, if you just have a restraining order against you, they don’t automatically take your guns.

Oklahoma

Right now, Oklahoma doesn’t have a law that specifically says guns can be taken from people seen as a very high risk. The state doesn’t take away guns in cases of crime-related bans or family violence, whether there’s a conviction or a restraining order. But, if the police come to a family violence emergency call, they might have to step in and take away guns.
